Synopsis
There are two versions of the Pilot episode. 'The High Riders' was in black and white, while the second 'The Homecoming' was in colour. Both versions are worth watching because of the scene variations – the High Riders being the most complete with several added scenes.
Murdoch Lancer, owner of the Lancer ranch (100,000 acres of the San Joaquin Valley, California) is threatened by raiders and land 'pirates' (land grabbers). Murdoch has seen neither of his sons since their infancy: Scott has been brought up in wealth and privilege by his grandfather in Boston after his mother died giving birth to him; his half-brother Johnny raised in Mexico after his mother eloped, becoming the gunfighter, Johnny Madrid. Murdoch uses the Pinkerton Agency to locate his sons and lures them home with a promise of a $1000 dollars for an hour of their time. They stay, defeat the land pirates, and join Murdoch in partnership, each owning one-third of Lancer.
