These stories are deliberate explorations of the familiar characters in a setting that isnt canonical. Alternate Reality (or Alternate Universe) stories are, to quote Wikipedia, "usually what-ifs, where possibilities arising from different circumstances or character decisions are explored".
This could mean a different timeline, or one or other of the sons being raised at Lancer, or Johnny being a minister instead of a gunfighter and Scott being an outlaw, or they meet under different circumstances, or it's set in the present day ... the possibilities are endless.
